what is the difference in a landline phone and voice over ip phone?

  1. It depends what you mean. If you mean a phone that plugs into a phone line or a VOIP adapter, such as a Vonage box or MagicJack, there is no difference. Now, you can get VOIP specific phones, which have the VOIP adapter built in, and plug into the wall with Ethernet cable, or use Wi-Fi to connect to a VOIP service.
  2. Technically, they are both land line phones. The difference you are probably referencing, though, is that VOIP phones use your data network for dialing. A standard land line uses POTS (Plain Old Telephone) lines, a T-1, or a PRI for dialing.
