Who was Elisha Gray? What was his role in the development of the telephone system?

1. The claim by Encyclopedia Britannica is that Elisha Gray is known for his legal battle over the invention of the telephone. Bell used a transmitter of the same type which Gray invented previously to transmit his voice over a wire. In his patent application, Bell did not describe a transmitter like he used on the day of the voice transmission. Also, the receiver he used was like one Gray had created and used publicly a few months previously. Although Gray took Bell to court, the system awarded Bell with the patent. Hope this helps!
