can home alarm system work on voice ip phone?

1. Why not? VoIP works the same as a regular phone.
2. Not reliably. We are finding that we sometimes miss signals at the monitoring station, we can sometimes not connect to the panel for program changes. It seems to be something to do with the way the voice-over IP sends in packets. It can mess up reception of alarm info by the receiving equip. Not to mention that we don't feel confident that the service will be there 24/7 in case of an emergency -- certainly not worth a lawsuit, so we are looking for alternatives.
